Information About Istanbul

TOPKAPI  PALACE

Stands on a finger of land at the confluence of the  Bosphorus,the golden Horn and the sea of  Marmara,that maze of buildings that was the focal point of the Ottoman  Empire between the 15th and 19th conturies.The oldest and the largest of the remaining palaces in the world is the Topkapi Palace , a museum since 1924. The palace is located where the acropolis of Byzantium once stood on the peninsula overlooking the Golden Horn , the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. ( OPEN  everyday except  Tuesday.9.00 a.m –5.00 p.m ) 

 

DOLMABAHCE  PALACE

The facede of Dolmabahce Palace ,built in the mid-19th century ,stretches for 600meters along the European shore of the Bosphorus.

(Open everyday except Monday and Thursday. 9.30  a.m-5.00 p.m)  

 

BEYLERBEYI   PALACE

Was built on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus in the 19 the Sultan's summer residence.( Open everyday except Monday and Thursday 9.30 a.m-5.00p.m)

 

YILDIZ  PALACE  COMPLEX

Includes a series of pavilions and a mosque. It was completed at the end of 19th century.( Open everyday except Monday 9.00 a.m - 4.00 p.m )

MOSQUES

IMPERIAL SULTANAHMET MOSQUES

The building is more familiarly known as the Blue Mosque because of its magnificiant interior panaling of blue  and white Iznik tiles. Although built between1609 and1616 by Sultan Ahmet I ( and named after him ) the mosque is know throughout the world as "the Blue Mosque" owing to the dominant colour of the paint and the ceramic tiles used generously to decorate its interior

 

IMPERIAL  SULEYMANIYE   MOSQUE

The cascading domes and four  splender  minaretes of the mosque dominate the skyline on the Golden Horn’s west bank. A beauty outstanding even among all those domes and minarets that define the skyline of Istanbul, the Suleymaniye Mosque is the largest and most grandiose in the city. It facinates every visitor with the aesthetic supremancy of its interior and exterior, and its harmonious and pleasant proportions.

 

THE   IMPERIAL  FATIH  MOSQUE

Bears the name of the Ottoman congueror of the Istanbul Fatih Sultan Mehmet, and is the site of his mouseleum. 

 

MOSQUE  OF  EYUP

The first mosque  built after the Ottoman conquest of the city ,this greatly venerated shrine attracts many pilgrims.Eyup is considered a sacred site by Moslem. Eyup-el-Ensari, the flag bearer of Mohammed,was killed here in the 7th century during the Arab seige. His grave,discovered during the conques of Istanbul, was enclosed by a large mausoleum , and next to it the first prominent mosque in Istanbul was built.

YENI(NEW) MOSQUE

Looms over the habour at Eminönü, greeting the incoming   ferryboats and Marmara Sea.

 

MUSEUM THE BASILICA OF AYASOFYA

(Holy wisdom) Now called the Ayasofya Museum is unguestionably one of the finest buildings of all time.The haghia Sophia , nominated by many authors and historians as ona of the eighth wonders of the world , is certainly a masterpiece of architecture since it is one of the few structures of such huge dimensions to have stood erect for so long .It is architecturel mastery was far a head of its time and unmatched for 1000 years.   (Open everyday except Monday.)

 

THE  KARIYE MUSEUM

After Hagia Sophia, the most important  Byzantine monument in Istanbul. Probobly a small church which had been built here before the 5th century Roman city walls gave its name  to the other churches built later at the same site .the existing edifice to the 11th-14th century turies. (Open everyday except Wednesday.

 

YEREBATAN SARNICI

It is near Hagia Sophia,  the sixth-century Byzantine cistern. It was built in the 6th century, in the reign of Justinian,to supply water to the palace complex nearby.There are 28 columns in each of the 12 rows of columns (a total of 336) and the cistern measures 140 metres by 70 metres . (Open everyday except Tuesday.)
